good silent movies

"Tess of the Storm Country" is a moving drama, included in our program to illustrate the work and contributions of director John S. Robertson, a star of Silent Hall of Fame.

The film grasps the viewer's attention from beginning until end.  A rich man has built a house on top of a hill and is going out of his way to get rid of his poor squatter neighbors living at the bottom. The rich man's son, however, is not only sympathetic to the plight of the poor, but also is attracted to a squatter girl by the name of Tess (Mary Pickford).

"Cops" is a Joseph M. Schenck short comedy, starring Buster Keaton and featuring Joe Roberts, a star of Silent Hall of Fame. 

The film is full of hilarious moments and demonstrates Buster Keaton's extraordinary athletic abilities. It enjoys a very strong 7.8 rating on IMDB.  "Cops" was added to the National Film Registry in 1997 as being deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".

"The Goat"" is a Joseph M. Schenck short comedy, starring Buster Keaton and featuring Joe Roberts, a star of Silent Hall of Fame. 

The film enjoys a very strong 7.8 user rating in IMDB.

"Way Down East" is a poignant drama directed by D. W. Griffith and starring Lillian Gish. This film illustrates the work of cinematographer Billy Bitzer, a star of Silent Hall of Fame.

The film tells the story about a society that ostracizes women for having a child out of wedlock.  Anna meets a man, who, in order to get her affections, sets up a fake marriage with her.  Then after she becomes pregnant he betrays her.  Anna's baby dies and she is banned from the boarding house. 

"The Outlaw and His Wife", "You and I" in IMDB, is a Northern drama, featuring Victor Seastrom (Sjöström), a star of Silent Hall of Fame.

A stranger finds work in the ranch of a rich widow. He is a strong and hard worker, and is promoted to oversee the farm. The stranger and the widow fall in love. One day, however, he is recognized as a fugitive from justice living under an assumed name and must flee. The woman follows him and they live as outcasts in the mountains for many years. Chased by the law they have to run farther and deeper into inhospitable wilderness.

"The General", a thrilling comedy about the Civil War, lifted Buster Keaton from the ashes of oblivion decades after his name and legacy were forgotten.  Audiences and critics in the 1920ies did not appreciate this extraordinary masterpiece, but Buster Keaton always regarded "The General" as his best film.  Today he is totally vindicated and the world agrees with him.

"The Beloved Rogue" is a historical romantic drama featuring John Barrymore and Marceline Day, a star of Silent Hall of Fame.
