In the fourth film of the series, Sherlock Holmes assists the inventor of a revolutionary bomb sight, Dr Tobel, to smuggle his work out of Switzerland and into England. Once in England the bomb sight pieces and the Tobel go missing, leaving Holmes and Watson with code of dancing stick figures to break before Professor Moriarty so they can find the remaining pieces of the weapon. A dowdy secretary named Sylvia Brenner (Constance Bennett) agrees to marry her rich, divorce lawyer boss Gaylord Stanton (Kenneth MacKenna) so that he can avoid a marriage to one of his regular clients. The deal is that Sylvia will get a great allowance and the ability to travel anywhere she wants. While on a trip to Paris she begins to find herself and develop into a confident, uninhibited woman.

Three cheap musical boxes (each one playing a subtly different version of "The Swagman"), manufactured in Dartmoor Prison, are sold at a local auction house. However, a criminal gang is determined to steal and recover all three, even if it means committing murder. Sherlock Holmes tries to recover the music boxes and crack the secret code contained in the tune before the gang can get what they want.
