When the wealthy Wall Street businessman Chester Hamilton (Sidney Blackmer) is arrested for missing the payment of due alimonies to his ex-wife, he finds his butler Oswald Groggs (Charles Ruggles) in the jail arrested for the same motive. Chester gives 2,500.00 $ to Oswald to pay his debts, but the butler gives only part of the money to his ex-wife and travels to the seashore on vacation pretending to be the wealthy "Sir" Oswald Groggs.

Upon receiving a death threat from the "Gorilla", a killer infamous for a string of murders, insurance broker Walter Stevens employs detectives Garrity, Harrigan and Mulligan for protection. The detectives arrive at Stevens' mansion that night, and proceed to explore the house and grounds, and question servants. All to no avail, because as the clock strikes midnight Stevens disappears.

Not to be confused with "Murder By Television" starring Bela Lugosi. This film is about a young inventor trying to get his television system financed. A gang of crooks are out to stop him. This film is considered science fiction by many because the concept of television was still on the drawing boards in the 30's, but it's also a comedy. Stars Lyle Talbot, Mary Astor, Nat Pendleton, and Joyce Compton. Whether you would consider this scifi or not, you should find it entertaining anyway.
